Aprender teaches the Portuguese that's actually spoken in Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve — European Portuguese, not the Brazilian variant most apps default to. It began as a personal need: learning the language for a partner's family and a move to Portugal. That same gap in the market became the product's sharpest edge, an app built exclusively for people relocating to, living in, or travelling through Portugal who keep being taught the wrong dialect.
The Challenge
Nearly every mainstream language app teaches Brazilian Portuguese. For an expat ordering at a tasca in the Algarve or renting an apartment in Porto, that's the wrong vocabulary, the wrong pronunciation and the wrong cultural register. The challenge was to build a genuinely European-Portuguese-first learning experience — structured enough to take a complete beginner from A1 to C2, conversational enough to build real speaking confidence, and self-serve enough to launch and grow as a side project under LogicLeap's Function Forge App Store profile, without a marketing budget behind it.
What We Built
Aprender is built around a structured 72-lesson path mapped to the full CEFR scale, A1 to C2, so a complete beginner and an advanced learner are served by the same product. Sofia, the in-app AI tutor, gives learners someone to actually talk to — live, voiced, back-and-forth conversation available around the clock — while real-time speech recognition scores pronunciation instantly and feeds back corrections. Thirty-five guided dialogue simulations rehearse the situations expats genuinely face, from ordering at a tasca to renting a flat, and spaced-repetition smart flashcards resurface weak vocabulary at the moment it's about to be forgotten.
The commercial model is deliberately low-friction: free to start with no account required, and a Pro subscription that opens up the full course and unlimited AI practice. Streaks, daily goals and XP keep learners coming back, and cultural-immersion content grounds the language in the way Portugal actually speaks. The whole experience leads on the single positioning no competitor occupies — real European Portuguese, not Brazilian.
It ships under LogicLeap's Function Forge App Store profile as an own product rather than client work, supported by a marketing site at tryaprender.com and an affiliate partner programme. The app is actively maintained, with regular releases shipping through 2026, and its design has since become the template reused as a model for later Function Forge apps such as ParentPal.
Results
Aprender is live on the UK App Store in the Education category, free to download with a Pro tier, and holds a 4.3-star rating from its first 3 reviews. It drew 15 downloads in its first two days, and by March 2026 was noted as showing consistent organic growth within Function Forge's multi-app portfolio — momentum earned without paid acquisition. The product is actively shipping updates and running creator and affiliate outreach to expat and travel audiences, and its design has proven durable enough to be reused as the template for later apps in the portfolio.
